MAUI BUDGET TRAVEL
Haleakala SunriseJust like life, the best things in Maui are free. That is why Captain Ryan recommends you research your vacation ahead of time and explore the island without a tour guide. Whale watching is a perfect example of this. Every year, like many tourists, the Humpback whale travels to Maui to mate. Mating season for the Humpback is early from January to May. The Humpback whale is an endangered and beloved guest to the waters of Maui. These magnificent prehistoric mammals can be easily seen by land or by boat. Blowhole, pod, breach, calf, cow and bull are some whale watching terms to look up before you hit the waters. Thar she blows!

Captain’s Tip : When whale watching from land, scan the horizon overlooking the ocean for exhalation blows.

Black Sands BeachRoad to Hana is a 52 mile day long expedition that is as much about the journey as the destination itself. Road to Hana has 617 hairpin turns over 56 one lane bridges, many of which are cliff side overlooking the ocean. Along the way you will drive by picturesque waterfalls, gorgeous ocean views, tero fields, sacred pools and magnificent red sand and black sand beaches. The wind surfing capital of Hookipa Beach Park,Red Sands Beach Twin Falls, Linden berg’s grave, and the Oheo Gulch are popular stops on the Hana Hwy. Some of these amazing sites are off the beaten path, so a book, map, audio tape or CD may be helpful. The Road to Hana is a day long excursion and we strongly recommend that you start off early in the morning with a full tank of gas and a picnic lunch basket for this one of a kind journey. There are numerous businesses in Kihei that offer picnic lunches with sandwiches, chips, drinks and deserts for a great price. We recommend Sub Paradise on Dairy Road.

Little Beach, MauiOn the Southwest corner of Maui near Makena lies a secluded beach with a magical feel. Park your ride at Makena State Park, grab your beach bag and towel and proceed to Big Beach. Big Beach has a long stretch of stunning golden sand with crashing waves and lies only a few hundred yards south of Little Beach. Little Beach is separated from neighboring Big Beach by a small and easily climbable lava-flow wall. After carefully scaling the wall, you will have a spectacular view overlooking Little Beach with the Mokolini crater in the distance. Little Beach has a unique character that draws people of all kinds including locals, tourists, nudists, and the hippie culture. Little Beach has a funky vibe and is perfect for picnics, sunbathing, sunsets, bodysurfing and skinny-dipping. On Sunday afternoons step back in time, as a drum circle becomes the main event. Don’t for get to bring your sunscreen and a six-pack.

Old Lahana LuauOld Lahana Luau offers a traditional Hawaiian ceremony including the imue, and luau. Outstanding service highlights the all you can eat Hawaiian feast and open bar. One immediately feels welcome and ready for the party as a traditional Hawaiian lei and Mai Tai are given to each arriving guest. The Old Lahana Luau is a popular attraction and seating is limited. Book this event at least 2-3 months prior to your visit to ensure seating. Captain Ryan especially liked the coconut bikini tops.

WHERE TO STAY
There are world class resorts throughout the island of Maui. For budget travel, we strongly suggest staying at a privately owned bed and breakfast for individual and personal attention. we strongly suggest staying at a privately owned bed and breakfast for individual and personal attention. Many of Kauai’s bed and breakfast’s are priced under $100 per night and provide gourmet breakfast, beach towels, boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, videos, books, kitchenettes, and laundry facilities. A good Kauai bed and breakfast host offers their guests insider tips on local activities and dinning options.
