WHAT’S IN ROTATION JIM MORRIS and the BIG BAMBOO BAND Florida based Singer/Songwriter Jim Morris has a similar island rock, country theme as Jimmy Buffett. Morris’s music is party oriented, upbeat and fun. His words sing of beaches, bars, beer, fishing, good times with great friends, and aspirations for a more simple life. During the week of Parrot Heads Convention in Key West, I had the pleasure of seeing Jim Morris and the energetic Big Bamboo Band play on three separate days. Hoards of loyal Jim Morris Bocanuts proudly attended every show that week. A Bocanut is to Jim Morris as is a Parrot Head is to Jimmy Buffett. The hundreds of Bocanuts were on their feet dancing and singing the words to every song for the entire two hour set. Our favorite songs from the Seafood Platter album includesNo Beer Today, The Floating Opera, Laid Back and Key Wasted, A Three Day Drunk Looking For A Place To Happen, Island Daze, and Bocanuts. Purchase Seafood Platter NOW!
“It’s the feeling you get, when your on island time, You affects what you think, or how much to drink it will change you mind.”
- Jim Morris, Island Daze
Jimmy Buffett Jimmy Buffett is the gold standard for living in the tropical island vibes. No one personifies this way of living better that Jimmy Buffett himself.
“Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call,
Wanted to sail upon your waters
since I was three feet tall.
You've seen it all, you've seen it all”
- Jimmy Buffett, Pirate Looks At Forty
Parrot Heads in Paradise The annual Meeting of the Minds is held the weekend following Fantasy Fest. Meeting of the Minds is the meeting place for thousands of faithful Jimmy Buffett fans to sing, dance, drink, and listen to their favorite artists live on stage.

Michael McCloud- A Key West Original. One November I made my way to the Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West, Florida. What I witnessed was a dry humored, cynical, guitar strumming, alcohol powered jukebox named Michael McCloud. McCloud played his share of cover songs to please the tourists, but I was impressed by his island blend of original songs. Songs that were influenced by country, folk, blues, and reggae music. Michael McCloud’s first album Gretastits is named after one of his ex-wives. Gretastits is full of Michael McCloud originals. The Conch Republic Song is the Key West theme song which captures the spirit of Key West in one statement "I'd rather be here just drinking a beer than freezin' my ass in the North". Just Came Down For The Weekend was co-written by Shel Silverstein. This song had a catchy enough hook for Jimmy Buffett to buy the rights and record the song.
Michael McCloud's second album entitled Ain't Life Grand dons a Shel Silverstein characterization of McCloud on the cover. Peace And Quiet is one of my favorite Michael McCloud original songs. Today’s The Day captures resilient spirit, and determination of Mel Fisher's life. She Gotta Butt airs McCloud's grievances regarding a former over opinionated, "big boned" Schooner Wharf Bar waitress.
Michael McCloud's third CD entitled Another Day In Paradox is primarily cover songs. My favorites are If I had a Boat and American Dream. Other notable titles include Back to The Island, Treetop Flier, Banana Republic, and Schooner Warf Bar Dog. Don’t miss the heart felt patriotic WWII tribute Memorial. Memorial was the song heard in the Tom Hanks WWII memorial TV commercials. Memorial was also sang by Willie Nelson during the dedication of the WWII memorial. God bless the United States of America.
Captain’s Tip : Everyday, except for Monday Michael McCloud plays noon until five at the Schooner Wharf Bar. McCloud occasionally plays evenings at Willie T’s.
TOBY KEITH ACCUSED OF PLAGIARISM In November, 2004 a patron at the Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West, Florida sat at the bar to enjoy some music and have a cold beer. Usually one can compare a visit to the Schooner Wharf Bar to the Bill Murray movie Groundhog’s Day. This is because almost everyday at the Schooner War is about the same. There are sunny skies, tourists, barflies, lots of drinking, and Michael McCloud singing on stage. Everyday, except for Monday Michael McCloud plays a similar set of songs and has the same dry humored stories and cynical views on life, politics, religion, etc. On this day in November, the locally popular singer/songwriter Michael McCloud was exceptionally ornery.
After McCloud finished his original song Tourist Town Bar, he brought to the crowd’s attention that he had written that song over twenty years ago. He then acknowledged that Toby Keith has now released a song ( I Love This Bar), that is strikingly similar to McCloud’s Tourist Town Bar. I Love This Bar is a chart topping smash hit from Toby Keith's Shock 'N Y'all album. In reference to the similarities between the two songs, McCloud stated “You can call it artistic expression, but I call it plagiarism”. After sharing that a team of attorneys were currently working on the alleged “plagiarism” case, a then angry McCloud went on to say Toby Keith would soon be buying him a new car, sending his kids to college and even sending his grandchildren to college.
On-line sources have connected Keith to Key West during recording of the Jimmy Buffett License To Chill album and the Toby Keith Shock 'N Y'all album which were both recorded at Shrimp Boat Sound Studio in Key West, FL. The Shrimp Boat Sound Studio coincidentally is located within listening distance, only twenty-five short yards away from Schooner Wharf Bar where Michael McCloud plays live six days a week. The results from this lawsuit might “Shock Y’all” and when all is said and done McCloud might be able to ask Keith, “Who’s your daddy, now?”!
Bob Marley No music collection is complete without the legend of reggae. His musical brilliance is spiritual, political, and straight from the heart. When you listen to one of Bob Marley’s joints(songs), the world momentarily changes. Peace, equality, and justice become more than just a reality. Marley’s words give you meaning, making you feel thankful and blessed to be alive on God’s green Earth. One love. One heart. It will be alright!
“Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right, Let's get together and feel all right"
- Bob Marley, One Love
WORDS FROM THE CAPTAIN Along with your passport, we’ll provide you with the music that expresses our state of mind. It is a tribal rhythm that provides a cadence to live by. Once you have the frequency cerebrally locked in, then the pulse of the islands will set the stage. Match this pulse with meaningful lyrics that touch the soul and you’re half way to paradise. You can add the remaining ingredients to your liking. We suggest a little sand on your feet, a fresh ocean breeze in your hair, a little bit of sun and a cool concoction of rum. We are in the islands and the vibe is IRIE!
